welcome at the theaterherberg

Right in the centre of the north east part of the Groningen landscape you find the terp village Warfhuizen. Any unbiased visitor of this region will be impressed by its vastness which inspires peace and quiet at the same time. To many visitors this is a break away from every day cores. Here you can hike, pedal and canoe through the peaceful fields with the majestic farms often surrounded by many high trees. This landscape is not surprising, for ages this region has been a society dominated by agriculture.

Through this landscape of famous colours and skies the ‘maars’ meander, small water streams originated from the former trenches and ditches when the country was not yet surrounded by dikes. Colourful shoulders in the summer, bright yellow cole-seed fields around the month of May, the golden grain in June and July and autumn colours in September and October. All these elements make the Marnegebied a unique holiday destination, ideal for spending several weeks but also just a weekend or even one day.

Your host/actor Ton van der Velden let himself be inspired by the Hogeland (the high land) like many artists before him. In October 1994 he left The Hague for Warfhuizen and took up residence in the attached barn of the monumental and historic village farm at the Baron van Asbeckweg. After drastic rebuilding works four stylish and comfortable rooms came about. You might want to sleep in the Dickens room, the Shakespeare room, the Molière room or the Grimm room (4 pers.). You can dine in one of the cosy restaurants in the area.

A fantastic bed & breakfast place with a personal character. Your copious and surprising breakfast will be personally presented by your host with occasionally a country poem recited in the spotlights as an extra.

The Theaterberg is also the residential theatre of Ton van der Velden. Next to his theatre and television performances he organises several times a year a culinary theatre package deal. Then he stages literary solo performances, counts and stories. The guests who book this package deal will dine in restaurant ‘t Korensant in Molenrij and restaurant ‘t Schathoes on the Verhildersum estate in Leens.

Warfhuizen is an excellent starting-point for trips.

Hiking, biking (rental bikes can be arranged) and of course canoeing. This part of Groningen is known for its beautiful biking and canoe routes and lovely pick-nick spots. You may choose from art, antiques and garden routes. By car the national park ‘De Lauwersmeer’ can be reached in ten minutes. Furthermore you can hike across the mud flats, go for a swim or make a boat trip on the Lauwersmeer lake, visit the Wierdemuseum in Ezinge and the stronghold of Verhildersum in Leens with a permanent exhibition of sculptures by Eddy Roos in the beautiful garden. Another interesting visit will be to the Aduarerzijlen. This will give you a good impression of the history and waterworks of the region. Your host will be happy to advize you and make suggestions, also for your dining out. This region has several culinary restaurants.
